Women’s Panties used as Political Weapons

August 30, 2008 by Brenda

I have said on other occasions that I do not enjoy writing about political causes. But I was intrigued by the use of panties in the protest against secret prisons, so I broke down and wrote about Joe Corre’s cause with the “Fair Trade, My Arse” underwear. Well here I go again. I recently heard about women’s panties being used to protest Myanmar’s military regime.

Apparently, Montreal based activists, through the “Panties for Peace” campaign, are encouraging all women to send their panties to the Myanmar embassy in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Undoubtedly, the request comes in as a result of disgust and disdain for the Myanmar military who is preventing aid from reaching the people in the wake of the recent natural disaster.

The underlying premise is that the men in the military are frightened that contact with women’s panties will somehow undermine their power, relinquishing it completely. There is no idea yet on how many pairs of panties have been sent. The organization further hopes to raise funds for the cyclone victims through the same campaign.

Hats off or should that be Panties Off to all the women who contributed!

Lingerie in Politics?

April 1, 2008 by Brenda

soho storefront fair trade my arseWhile I personally prefer not to write about political issues publicly, I found the fact, that lingerie has managed to become embroiled in the heated dispute about secret prisons, very odd indeed.

Joe Corre, son of fashion industry icon Vivienne Westwood and co-founder of Agent Provocateur, has regularly taken stands against war, the establishment and political agendas in general. His recent design created in support of Reprieve, the human rights organization and Corre’s own Humanade, were presented by his mother while showing her Red Label Fall/Winter 2008 Collection. The bright orange panties wear the slogan and powerful message “Fair Trade My Arse”.

Because the panties were made in direct objection to the prisons around the world who practice human rights violations, the bright orange was chosen symbolizing the prison jumpsuits worn by inmates. The panties will be sold in Agent Provocateur stores in the US and the UK.

Known for his outspoken actions, in 2007, Joe Corre, rejected the prestigious MBE Award (Members of the Most Honorable Order of the British Empire).

Rock the Vote!

January 26, 2008 by Krista

In the US, this is a big year on the political circuit. For the first time in 8 years, we will be electing a new president. While a lot of attention is on the Democratic party with its female and minority front runners, some people are focusing more on the Republican side in a very personal way. The “I Love John McCain” classic thong is available for $12.99. Don’t worry Barack lovers. There’s one for you too! Check out all of them, and tons of other great political apparel, at cafepress.com. But most importantly, don’t forget to register to vote.Who knew politics could be so much fun?!
