Crysalis Ltd, the company behind the website ever-so-sexy.com is a small business and so everyone has to muck in with the work regardless of job title, which means even though I am the boss, I can find myself doing almost any of the day to day tasks that go to make the business run smoothly. From answering a customer query to packing an order – I’ve done the lot. But one of my favourite tasks is opening some of the parcels when new designs arrive in for the first time. And I can often be found hanging around stores when we are expecting the new arrivals, so that I can offer my assistance. Even though I may have seen samples and been involved in the decision to stock the items, I am still like a kid at Christmas when the first boxes arrive.
But behind the initial pleasure of parcel opening there is some anxiety. I can’t help wondering if we have chosen a winner or made a massive mistake and will be discounting like mad in a month or so to get rid of the line! Last year we tried asking our customers via our monthly newsletter what they thought of some of the designs we were considering. It seemed a good democratic way to make our stocking decisions and a sure fire way of ensuring items would sell but the responses were so variable we were scared to use the results as the basis for our decisions and carried on as before.
This brings me to how we make our purchasing decisions. Obviously we study trends and our own sales statistics. We also have a wish list facility on the site and we pull statistics from that in addition to reading The Lingerie Post avidly to pick up on the buzz among true lingerie fanatics. Then there are basic factors like quality standards and our house style but after that we are left with gut instinct. Yes, I did say gut instinct and finally, most important of all – wow factor. A new addition to our range must be capable of taking breath away. It may not always be my breath – it is a team decision after all. But the Toulouse design from Luxxa was definitely a heart stopping moment for me, while this amazingly tiny micro g-string from Lola Luna did it for Jen, my assistant and general woman of all work who puts me to shame for the number of hours she works – thanks Jen.
