Bra Sizing 101

September 24, 2007 by Kelly

Passionata JavaAnyone who wears a bra needs to know which size she should be wearing. But most women don’t – we have all heard the depressing statistic that anywhere from 70%-90% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. I used to be one of those unfortunate women. When I had my first bra fitting, years overdue, I was completely blown away. I hadn’t even ever heard of my size and I actually started crying in the dressing room. I didn’t expect a bra size to have such an impact on me – after all, it’s just a number – but I also realized how completely far off someone can be from their correct bra size without even realizing how uncomfortable and unsupported she is. This is why I am so passionate about making sure all women know how to determine whether or not their bras fit them correctly. So, before you do any shopping with these gorgeous new collections coming out, be sure you know your correct bra size! I’ll give you some tips for sizing yourself, but please remember that there is no substitute for a quality bra fitting at a good, old-fashioned lingerie shop. This article is a lot longer than most that we post on The Lingerie Post, but it is an invaluable one that is long overdue! For a DIY fitting, there are three measurements you need to take. Put on your best-fitting bra before you take any measurements. It is best to have a friend help you take your measurements, but if you are careful you can manage it by yourself. This method will give you a general idea of your size for the majority of brands out there. Some counties use a different sizing system. If you use the metric system, just remember that one inch equals 2.54 centimeters. You can use this online calculator if you’re not sure.

First, you need to find your band number. Measure just under your bust, at the crease where your breast meets yourPrincesse Tam-Tam Ironie ribcage. Measure all the way around your back, making sure the measuring tape is parallel to the floor. Make sure you are holding this snugly. Add five inches to this measurement. This is your band number. For example, if you measure a 33 inch ribcage circumference, your band size is approximately 38.

Second, confirm this measurement by measuring under your arms, across your back, and around the top of your chest. This number should be equal to the band size you calculated in the beginning (in this example, 38 inches).

Third, you need to determine your cup size. With your best-fitting bra still on, measure around the fullest part of your bust line. In this example, let’s say you took a bust measurement of 41 inches. To calculate your cup size, subtract the band measurement from the cup measurement. In this example, 41-38=3 inches. Every inch represents a cup size, so the final bra size would be a 38C.

1″ = A cup
2″= B
3″ = C
4″ = D
5″ or more = consult the links at the end of this article for information on larger cup sizing. It gets complicated!

Panache Harmony

If you are an odd number, you may try rounding down for better support. If that band size is a smidge too small, you can try buying a few bra extenders to use during the first couple months. If you round up, you will end up needing to replace your bras far more often as they wear out quicker.

This method only gives you an approximate idea of what your bra size is. Now, the fun part! Go shopping and try on a lot of bras. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments to your original calculation – everyone is different, and remember, it was just a good approximation. I actually wear a band one size smaller (and, consequently, one cup size larger) than my original calculations predicted, but if you know what to look for you can decide if adjustments need to be made.

Rihanna's band is too big!Be sure to try on a new bra fastened on the loosest hook. As the bra wears out and the elastic begins to deteriorate, you will need to tighten it and move on to the other hooks. Your band needs to fit snugly – this is where the majority of your support is coming from! If your band rides up and is not perfectly parallel to the floor (even a bit lower in the back is good), like Rihanna’s bra in her latest video for “Hate That I Love You,” you are wearing a band size that is too big. Try going down a band size until it fits properly. Remember, when you go down a band size you must go up a cup size to maintain the same fit in your cups. If you find that the band on a 38C is too big, try on a 36D next. If your band on your 38C is too tight and painful, try a 40B.

Marissa Miller's cups are too small! If your breasts are not fully encased by the cup or the center gore does not lie flush against your breastbone, your cups are too small. The lovely Marissa Miller is wearing a cup size that is far too small, as you can see that the end of the underwires are touching breast tissue instead of lying flat against her sternum between her breasts. If you want cleavage like this, get a push-up bra in your correct size! If you have a “double-boob” effect as your breast tissue bulges out of your cups, you are wearing a too-small cup size. If your cups wrinkle or gap, you are wearing a cup size that is too big. Try going down a cup size.

Experiment! You may wear different sizes in different brands (just like jeans). If you are outside the range of normal department or lingerie stores, you’ll have to find a good lingerie shop or shop online. Watch our sale section for coupon codes offering free returns; this will be a lifesaver in the beginning!

Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style features La Petite Coquette

September 23, 2007 by Krista

Want to see the inside of my favorite New York City boutique, La Petite Coquette? Well, tune in to Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style on Bravo and see the legendary store and the one and only Rebecca Aspan giving advice to the makeover recipient. This occurs as a result of what I find to be the most interesting part of the show. Tim Gunn’s assistant, the lovely model, Veronica Webb, announces, much to the chagrin of the guest, that she will be inspecting her underwear drawer! (I know we lingerie fanatics here would have no problem with that, but to anyone else, I’m sure it’s frightening.) Clearly, they understand how important that what goes on under the clothes is just as important as the clothes!

When she arrives at the shop, she tries on a number of bras and receives one of the best bra fitting tips ever. When you try on a bra, make sure it fits well using the last hook. As your bras become well worn, this will allow you to lengthen the life by having the option to tighten the fit with the next hook. Thanks Rebecca! See the clip here: http://video.bravotv.com/player/?id=153559. For more information about the show, check it out here: http://www.bravotv.com/Tim_Gunn/index.php. Many more of the fantastic New York boutiques will be featured in upcoming episodes. I can’t wait!

Loving La Petite Coquette

September 11, 2007 by Krista

La Petite CoquetteWell, I have mentioned my most favorite lingerie shop on here quite a few times. Recently, Kelly reviewed the very comprehensive Lingerie Handbook written by the owner of La Petite Coquette, Rebecca Aspan. Now, I have more praises to sing about this must-visit, New York City hot spot for both celebrities and us ordinary ladies alike.I have always loved the attention paid to customer service at the store. All the sales attendants are attentive, but without being pushy. My trip today was for a fit update. My every day essentials were getting a little worn out and not providing me the level of support I want (and need!). According to the experts, most women are wearing the wrong size bra.Chantelle Senso And, as you know, life (i.e. weight loss/gain, pregnancy, birth control, time) can cause changes to your size as well. So, it is a good practice to get re-fit as you noitce changes, or, when you notice a lack of lift.

Back to me. As soon as I entered the store, I was greeted by a helpful sales attendant, Nisha, who asked me a few questions before leading me back to a changing room. She analyzed my current situation and made a few recommendation. She frequently checked to see how each of the bras fit, how I liked them, etc. Before I knew it, she had brought me a few more. After a few tries, I finally settled on the Chantelle Senso. It’s truly amazing how a perfect fit can make a drastic difference. While I love my pretty things, today I was only in the market for the practical. (Although the ones she showed me were very pretty for sure!)

I love this store because they have a wide variety of options for a wide variety of sizes. And you are in luck, if you are in NYC (or even online – check out the interactive store), La Petite Coquette is having a great sale! What more could you ask for?! Enjoy!

Victoria’s Secret New Reversible Bra

September 1, 2007 by Kelly

Victoria's Secret Reversible BraVictoria’s Secret seems to have stolen my idea. A few months ago, while window shopping in the store, I saw a Secret Embrace bra with a fun print on the inside. I thought it was pretty, but not as fun as if you could switch between the black exterior and the printed interior. I even played with it, flipping them around. Well, someone must have been spying on me in the store 😉 because Victoria’s Secret has now come out with a reversible bra! Victoria's Secret Reversible BraMost have prints on one side and a solid color on the other side, although a couple have solid colors on both. The straps are also convertible, so really you can wear this one bra four different ways!

I tried one on (well, a very ill-fitting one – Victoria’s Secret doesn’t carry my bra size, but I tried on the closest one available), and I have to say that it was really fun playing around with it in the dressing room! The reversing worked much better than I thought it would and the bra looks just as good either way. The matching panties are not reversible of course (although they do coordinate), so anyone who wants exactly matching sets might not have as much fun with it. Still, it’s an exciting new product. Victoria’s Secret always has something up its sleeve!

Be sure to visit our sales section for a coupon for $10 off and free panties when you buy any bra from the Very Sexy collection, including the reversible ones!

Full Coverage Uplift Bra

August 4, 2007 by Kelly

Victoria’s Secret has announced the introduction of what they claim to be the first full coverage bra with uplift. The bra hasVictoria's Secret Full Coverage Uplift their popular Infinity Edge technology, designed to eliminate “visible bra line” and the stretch-to-fit design conforms to your body. Thank goodness for whoever came up with this idea – some women need full coverage and that certainly shouldn’t mean a sacrifice of sex appeal!

Of course, the bra-fitting fanatic in me cannot help but notice (and mention) that the bands on these models are riding up too high. Ladies, make sure your bands are parallel to the floor (or even a little bit lower in the back is good – it hoists you up!). If they ride up, go down a band size! I’ve definitely noticed that Victoria’s Secret models don’t show a well-fitting bra the majority of the time (not even close), nor have their associates correctly sized anyone I know who has gone in for a fitting at the chain. Frankly, it’s disappointing for such a large retailer. Sigh.

Victoria’s Secret can offer some great, trendy products at reasonable prices, but I wouldn’t advise anyone to go in there without having had a reputable fitting at a quality lingerie shop!
