When most of us think of shapewear, we think of unsightly and boring pieces that are meant to stay hidden underneath our clothing while helping us create the illusion of a perfectly slim silhouette. Well it appears that shapewear companies have started a new trend. Many have begun launching lines of shapewear that are attractive enough to be worn as regular outerwear and the latest company to emerge with a line featuring outerwear-inspired designs is Spanx.

Entitled Simplicity, the line is comprised of slimming separates that boast a chic design with thoughtful details. Not a lot of colors, but some of the pieces do come with a color detail option. Not all of the looks can work as outerwear pieces — three out of seven can to be exact.

Silhouettes include a scoop neck cami that is available with fashionable patterns; a V-neck camisole; an open-cut camisole (reminiscent of Biflex’s OverBra); a lingerie strap camisole; a mid-thigh shaper that is also available with fashion patterns; a half slip; and a girl short shaper available with fashion patterns. Prices range from $44 to $59.

Pop singer Britney Spears wore a Dolce & Gabbana black bodysuit underneath a sheer long sleeved dress. Ciara, who wore Givenchy, also sported a black bodysuit under what appears to be a partly transparent jumpsuit. I can’t help but think that Britney would’ve looked less catastrophic if some of the length was cut off.

Check out each look below and let us know who wore the trend best!

Four of the company’s lingerie experts have launched a “goddess-worthy” gift guide outlining some fabulous finds, and they’re all under $40!

According to a Frederick’s designer, zebra prints are all the rage this holiday season. “A zebra print plush robe embellished with Bombshell Pink trim is the perfect idea for a girl who loves color and pattern,” she said. Check out the $39 robe below!

The second price-friendly option is Frederick’s Satin 3-piece PJ set. “The tap pant, part of the three-piece set, is a good way to update the look and makes it sexier. For a sexy, bold statement I think ‘Frederick’s Red’ is a great color choice,” said Frederick’s associate buyer. The Frederick’s Red style is actually on sale for $20, down from $39!

According to Frederick’s senior buyer, lingerie lovers love matching sets—and she’s right! “Matching sets create a full, sexy look from head to toe,” she said. “My favorite is the retro inspired Pin-Up Chic set. Pops of Bombshell Pink, a nice alternative to red, make it sassy, sexy and wearable beyond the holiday season.”

The fourth expert, Frederick’s creative director, says sexy stocking stuffers are an absolute must for the holidays. “Boy shorts are fun and flirty, plus they make great stocking stuffers,” she said. She suggests the Ellie (4 for $25) as an ideal style choice for an array of body types.

Recent runways hinted one of the biggest trends this season would be wearing innerwear as outerwear, but did we really think anyone other than Lady Gaga and Madonna would sport the look? Maybe, maybe not, but the truth is the risky style seems to be catching on among the celebs.

Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, Vantage Point, Blackout) and fashion icon Chloë Sevigny (Big Love, Broken Flowers) were recently spotted at Prada’s book launch party at the Rodeo Drive boutique shamelessly flaunting their Prada bras. Can we agree Chloë did a better job at styling the look?

What do you think of this trend? It’s something else than Big and Tall Outerwear for men, isn’t it?

The Daily Mail recently noted that sales of stockings and suspender belts have recently surged – retailers are reporting that sales have increased by a third in just the last few weeks! They suspect it is because obvious stockings and visible garter belts have become a quick trend among celebrities like Katy Perry and Rihanna, who wear their dresses short enough to show off straps and welts. Denise Fraser (lingerie buyer for Figleaves) says,

“We have seen a very significant increase in sales of stockings over the last six weeks. Stockings and hold-ups are 35 per cent up on the year for the same period whereas tights are only marginally up on last year. The Dita Von Teese effect has certainly taken hold. Women are desiring a more feminine, sexy look and in the recession, they are buying something sexy to improve their mood. We are also attributing it to the return of Forties and Fifties trends, which we have been seeing on the catwalk. Ladies’ briefs with built-in, detachable suspender belts are proving particularly popular. There are such beautiful fabrics and styles available that it is impossible for women not to feel glamorous and sexy.”

Do you plan to sport this trend and show off your lingerie when you go out, or will you keep your garter belts and stockings under wraps, strictly for at-home viewing?

Antiflirt is a French brand that doesn’t have wide distribution outside of continental Europe. There are stockists throughout the world, but Antiflirt are no where near the Queens of Export as other French brands like Aubade. The company has recently completed another revamp of their website. In one corner of their website, they offer a look back at their trends and designs over the years.

The 1980s are labeled as the “Body Shock” decade. Looking at these designs from nearly 30 years ago (older than many TLP readers), it is comforting to know that the fashion that stays hidden under our clothes seems pretty timeless. Unlike the jean hipsters with boot cut legs that have defined several years of current outerwear fashion, it is hard to guess the year these pieces were produced without taking hairstyle cues from the models. I’m sure the rise of the thong will clearly mark the mid 90s and early 00s and the boy short maybe the signature line of the late 00s.

The 1990s are defined by Antiflirt as Grunge and Sexy. They see the decade as asexual or highly influenced by pieces borrowed from men — striped shirts and track pants. Antiflirt decided to move away from black and white and shoot the 1990s in a fairly broad colour scheme.

For 2009, Antiflirt has returned to black and white. At this point, it is hard to guess what will be the real trends we can look back on in 5-10 years.

What color knickers will you be wearing on New Year’s Eve? If you’re like me, you hadn’t thought that far ahead yet. But if you’re like many women around the world, you have already picked out your yellow panties in preparation for the big day. In many Spanish-speaking countries, wearing yellow panties at the stroke of midnight as the New Year turns is thought to bring wealth and good luck in the coming year. Yellow is the color of choice because it is most closely associated with gold. Tradition says you must cast away your old undies at the stoke of midnight and put on a yellow pair. There are some details to keep in mind, however: to be lucky, they must be brand new; for extra luck, you can wear them inside out. The folklore only applies to women, not men, and other kinds of lingerie (like bras, slips, and garter belts) don’t count. If your knickers were given to you as a gift, they are said to be the luckiest of all.

The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was forbidden for Spaniards to wear bright colors. People believed wearing yellow would bring them good fortune, so they wore the lucky shade as underwear, which couldn’t be seen. If you’re looking for love next year, wear red instead of yellow. Here are some cute yellow panties I found at HerRoom.com from Honeydew and Ed Hardy, which you can hopefully find at a store near you in time for the big day:

With the markets down and no sign of a rebounding economy on the horizon, people all around the world are tightening their belts and scrutinizing their budgets. Smaller amounts of disposable income means that most industries are seeing drops in profits. However, hosiery is one of the few seeing increases and experiencing the lipstick effect, or the “Lipstick Index.” This term developed out of an economic trend, during down economic times, that showed as profits for other products decreased, lipstick sales increased. Why? The idea is that when there is less money to spend on yourself, you tend to splurge on those small, relatively inexpensive luxuries, like lipstick, rather than more extravagant wardrobe purchases.

In this past year, hosiery has exhibited this trend. According to sources cited in the Wall Street Journal, U.S. women’s hosiery sales have risen 2.3% over the past year. Dan Sackrowitz, vice president of business development for one of TLP’s favorite online retailers, Bare Necessities, says that customers have been purchasing opaque or patterned tights as a way to update their current wardrobes. He further remarks to the WSJ that sales of hosiery increased 60% in September and 70% in October. Wow! (See here for the full article.)

Want to know more? Check out Rene’s series of informative posts on popular hosiery brands.

Want to know what I have my eye on? See below for my favorite hosiery picks (available at Bare Necessities). And with $5 shipping every day, you can afford to stay in and avoid venturing out into the cold to buy them!

Across the board the girly, fashion-forward brands are bringing out these Springy designs. For everyone living in my corner of the world, this is coming just when the fall fashions are starting to roll out, so they will help keep a little cheer as the weather cools down. All the ladies in the opposite corner of the world can start wearing these to herald the coming of spring.

Of course, these designs aren’t the steamiest we’ve seen and probably aren’t what you’ll want to wear for a hot date, but they are a great way to be good to yourself for a cozy Saturday or an everyday treat. I can’t wait to get my hands of this cheerful trend! Now I just have to pick one…

Fleur’t has been mentioned many times here on TLP. It is a personal favorite of mine! Every collection is well thought out and designed with a woman’s needs in mind. Both the Spring/Summer 2008 and Fall 2008 collections have added new touches, colors, patterns, and textures to the already successful boy pants, bralets, camis, and chemises. Women of all age groups and interests can find something to their liking in one of the many fleur’ty groups. Look below and find the fleur’t that fits you! Enjoy! classic fleur’t

Fleur’t is possibly best known for its super comfortable and super soft lulu’s boy pant! To accommodate the wide range of women who swear by this staple, lulu’s boy pant are now available in two new sizes – Petite/Small and Large/Large in addition to the already existing Small/Medium and Medium/Large! And the sizes aren’t the only new addition. Fleur’t has added an assortment of fun, eye-popping colors and cute, sassy patterns. I’m a fan of the solids papaya and pink lavender as the patterns lemongrass damask and rose giraffe! Also find these colors and patterns in the low-rise thong, lace v-thong, and g-string. The lulu collection, which in addition to the boy pant and low-rise thong, includes a bralet, criss-cross cami, lace strap cami, long cami, criss-cross chemise, and a new yoga pant! Mix and match them all for a cute and cozy look. The amber collection is a fleur’t favorite featuring pretty lace overlays. Again, the pieces in this group can be mixed and matched. In addition to the camis and chemise, the amber collection is noted for its delicate kimono robe. New to the amber collection are a lace bralet and matching ½ lace thong boy.

Spring/Summer 2008

The Spring/Summer collection is already in stores and will continue to appear in stores over the next few months. One new group for spring, valerie, features heathered rayon spandex in black and grey edged with ivory stretch cluny lace. Both the empire cami and chemise are marked by a very fleur’ty open front. The same stretch lace accents both the tunic and cropped ruffle pant.

I love the chantal group as it reflects a new trend in fleur’t lingerie – prints! Made of silk charmeuse and overlaid with lace, chantal is perfect for lounging or sleeping. In addition to hot pink and aqua, the lace bust cami and chemise and coordinating boxer short also is available in coral swirl or aqua swirl prints.

With spring comes an influx of weddings, so vanessa is perfect for the blushing bride. Choose from a lace front low-rise thong, lace bralet, and lace bust cami and chemise.

Speaking of prints (again), jessica is an all print group that evokes a youthful spirit! Pair the cami with the matching lace brief or long wide leg pant or the chemise with the lace v-thong. Prints include pink leopard, green floral, pink polka dot, and ivory polka dot!

If all of this wasn’t already enough, lulu has to make an impression on spring! Look for lulu in light, airy springy colors like white, sky, and pink! In April, lulu is available in pink, lemon, and seafoam before brightening things up in May with whimsical colors like fuchsia, papaya, and orchid. Perfect for the tropical vacation you will need around that time! After all that fun, it will be time for rest and relaxation. Muted colors like ivory, pink, and black are accented with a silvery shade called dove, reflecting the calm and serene onset of summer.

There are so many other exciting elements to the collection including more prints, more bright colors, and more styles. I love the low rise ruched back panty in the amy collection as I think the ruched looked is absolutely darling and flatters the female form. Additionally, it is edged with a sweet heart shaped elastic, which I am sure will make it popular with lots of ladies. I also like the agatha collection as it offers a new tunic dress for the client who wants a little more coverage. In the caroline collection, there are a range of styles with a variety of coverage options. Choose from the spaghetti strapped, lace bust cami and chemise or the lace tank and tank dress featuring wider straps for additional coverage.
