Want to see the inside of my favorite New York City boutique, La Petite Coquette? Well, tune in to Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style on Bravo and see the legendary store and the one and only Rebecca Aspan giving advice to the makeover recipient. This occurs as a result of what I find to be the most interesting part of the show. Tim Gunn’s assistant, the lovely model, Veronica Webb, announces, much to the chagrin of the guest, that she will be inspecting her underwear drawer! (I know we lingerie fanatics here would have no problem with that, but to anyone else, I’m sure it’s frightening.) Clearly, they understand how important that what goes on under the clothes is just as important as the clothes!

When she arrives at the shop, she tries on a number of bras and receives one of the best bra fitting tips ever. When you try on a bra, make sure it fits well using the last hook. As your bras become well worn, this will allow you to lengthen the life by having the option to tighten the fit with the next hook. Thanks Rebecca! See the clip here: http://video.bravotv.com/player/?id=153559. For more information about the show, check it out here: http://www.bravotv.com/Tim_Gunn/index.php. Many more of the fantastic New York boutiques will be featured in upcoming episodes. I can’t wait!

Recently, Kelly reviewed the very comprehensive Lingerie Handbook written by the owner of La Petite Coquette, Rebecca Aspan. Now, I have more praises to sing about this must-visit, New York City hot spot for both celebrities and us ordinary ladies alike.I have always loved the attention paid to customer service at the store. All the sales attendants are attentive, but without being pushy. My trip today was for a fit update. My every day essentials were getting a little worn out and not providing me the level of support I want (and need!). According to the experts, most women are wearing the wrong size bra. And, as you know, life (i.e. weight loss/gain, pregnancy, birth control, time) can cause changes to your size as well. So, it is a good practice to get re-fit as you noitce changes, or, when you notice a lack of lift.

Back to me. As soon as I entered the store, I was greeted by a helpful sales attendant, Nisha, who asked me a few questions before leading me back to a changing room. She analyzed my current situation and made a few recommendation. She frequently checked to see how each of the bras fit, how I liked them, etc. Before I knew it, she had brought me a few more. After a few tries, I finally settled on the Chantelle Senso. It’s truly amazing how a perfect fit can make a drastic difference. While I love my pretty things, today I was only in the market for the practical. (Although the ones she showed me were very pretty for sure!)

I love this store because they have a wide variety of options for a wide variety of sizes. And you are in luck, if you are in NYC (or even online – check out the interactive store), La Petite Coquette is having a great sale! What more could you ask for?! Enjoy!

I could not, in good conscience, keep this information from readers of The Lingerie Post! The Lingerie Handbook was written by Rebecca Apsan, owner and founder of La Petite Coquette boutique. It is a comprehensive and very well-written guide to the world of lingerie – including bras, panties, hosiery, shapewear, and slips. Apsan’s attitude about lingerie (that it can and should be worn every day – a sentiment I certainly endorse) is positively addicting. First of all, she gives you the basics for every category – e.g. photos and descriptions of all different kinds of panties, how to put on shapewear and hosiery, and how to find a well-fitting bra (a section I hoped would be a bit more fleshed out, but it was still quite good and encouraged women to get a professional fitting, which is always a good idea). Each section also includes a history of the pieces and scattered trivia. Did you know that the traditional bow found on the center gore of bras dates back to a time when even fine ladies bathed only scarcely? They would put ribboned sachets in their cleavage to put off a more pleasing aroma. Now there is no need for that, of course, but the custom has been passed down until it is now just a small bow still found on many bras.

The photos include very popular brands, such as Le Mystere, Spanx, Hanky Panky, and Lunaire (I only wish she gave information on the pieces shown, because there are some real beauties I would love to track down for myself!). Plus, the book is very new which means the information is all very up-to-date. I highly recommend this book as a superb reference for any lingerie aficionado. The information is thorough and presented well. If you’re not a lingerie fan yet, you’ll soon be one after reading Apsan’s infectious appreciation for all kinds of lingerie! What a great resource!

My only disappointment was the difficulty I had in locating the book on La Petite Coquette’s website. I had to put an item in my cart before a link was provided on my cart page, underneath the items I was ordering, for the book. Even then, no page is available with any information on it. However, the trouble may be worth it because you get a discount of a few dollars by ordering there instead of another retailer.

Obviously we had to share this information with the rest of you lingerie-lovers out there…

Here’s what the writers have to say:

“The Lingerie Handbook, by renowned owner Rebecca Apsan with Sarah Stark, is the definitive guide to everything about underthings. Nothing like this has ever been written before! [...]

You’ll find practical tops-to-bottoms tips, historical tidbits and how lingerie can change both your look, and your outlook. This is a bust must-have if your bra is ever uncomfortable, if you’ve worn the same size since college or just wondered why bras are so expensive anyway. It covers (and uncovers): panties, slips, sleepwear, shapewear, stockings, tights, garters…from what to wear under there to the art of dressing to undress (with tips for men!). Also, care & upkeep, how to stash, what to trash…and where to begin!”

If you’re interested in reading this book, it’s available for a special promo price of $9.95 in stead of $13.95 with any purchase at La Petite Coquette…

Thanks for the heads up Krista!
