I know, I know – writing a post about how to put on stockings might sound as silly as writing an article about how to put on trousers. You just pull them on and fasten, right? But the truth is, putting your stockings (or tights, or pantyhose, or thigh-highs) on incorrectly can cause runs or other damage to the delicate fabric. Here’s how to do it correctly:

What Katie Did Seamed Stockings

If you need a garter belt, put it on now.

Make sure your feet are well moisturized, and that your toenails are trimmed and free of hangnails.

Take the same precautions with your hands. To be extra safe, you can use hosiery gloves to protect your stockings from your hands.

Grasp the opening of the stocking, and slowly gather the stocking into your hand. Continue down the leg until you have the whole leg bunched in your hands and your fingers have reached the toe.

Put your foot into the stocking. Make sure the stocking isn’t twisted. If you have a reinforced heel and/or toe, make sure everything is in the proper position. If your hosiery has a back seam, ensure that it is positioned correctly along the back of your heel.

Slowly pull the stocking up your leg. If you have a back seam (or other vertical decoration) you may find it helpful to do this in front of a mirror so you can check for squiggly lines as you go. If the seam is crooked, don’t pull on the stocking into position when it is already in your leg. Roll the stocking down to the area of the squiggle and carefully begin to pull the stocking up again with the line straight.

If you are wearing pantyhose, tights, or thigh-highs, you’re now done! If you are wearing stockings, it’s time to attach them to the garter belt.

Are you tired of pulling out damaged, twisted, tangled bras from the washing machine, but don’t have time to hand wash? If you’re anything like most women, you know you shouldn’t toss your bras into the wash, but do it anyways because it’s quick and easy. Enter the NEW Berry Ball & Berry Bag from Berry Perry, launching Summer 2010. This complete laundry solution set is specifically designed to care for lingerie quickly, easily and effectively, offering solutions not only for bras, but for underwear, hosiery, socks, swim and other delicates as well. The set comes available in sizes Small and Large to accommodate cup sizes 32A – 38D, in colors Pink, Purple or Blue. The Berry Ball & Berry Bag delivers in stores & e-retailers (including ComfortHouse.com and N-fini.com) throughout the United States beginning April 15th, 2010, at a suggested retail price of $13.99.

While throwing bras into the wash will result in twisting, deforming, puncturing, underwire damage, pilling, scratching, tangling and more, bras are protected throughout the entire wash cycle safe inside the Berry Ball, maintaining shape, comfort and support. The Berry Ball additionally features a unique Scrubbing Ball specifically designed to clean bra cups from the inside, creating friction to both clean and aid in dissolving detergent as well. Lose one too many socks in the wash? With your underwear, hosiery, socks and other delicates safely enclosed inside the Berry Bag, you never have to worry about losing another sock or pair of underwear in the washing machine again (and say good-bye to pulling out stretched, runned and twisted hosiery!). When not in use, easily hang the Berry Ball with an attached strap, or even use as convenient bra storage.ry about pesky security going through your unmentionables again!sult.

Going on vacation? Don’t stuff your bras into the bottom of your suitcase where they will inevitably be crushed. Tuck safely into the Berry Ball for a smart, convenient storage and travel item, and arrive at your destination with your bras still in tact. And – never wor

The Berry Ball has undergone extensive research & development to be sure the product is 100% safe in your washing machine, so it will not cause damage to your machine or your clothes. Additionally, the product features closures in addition to a backup clasp, so it will never pop open mid-cycle. For best results, put only 1 bra in the Berry Ball at a time, however multiple Berry Balls may be washed in each load. While the Berry Bag is dryer-safe, never put the Berry Ball into the dryer – be sure to hang the product and your bras to dry. The Berry Ball and Bag complete laundry solution set truly lets you save valuable time by using the washing machine, while yielding a delicate, hand-wash result.

Pick up a bottle of Perky Panties, a pheromone infused lingerie wash. Pheromones are chemical signals that trigger a natural sexual response in members of the opposite sex.

Perky Panties Lingerie Wash adds the ultimate sexual temptation to your intimates. Perky Panties gently cleans most delicate hand washables while adding a fresh-n-sexy fragrance to your intimate apparel.

According to the folks at Soak, “Carrie is a fun loving multi-tasker. She’s as happy carrying your craft projects up and down stairs, carrying towels to the beach and toys to the park, as she is keeping your yarn stash neat and other stuff organized at home…Phil is bright and indispensible. He offers safe haven for soaking your lacy lingerie and sexy swimwear. Phil loves protecting hand-washables from the rest of the laundry and relieving the sink of its duties by providing a safe haven for soaking. He also offers safe haven for dyeing yarns and fibers, and soaking your finished knits and crafty projects.”

Carrie measures 12″ tall by 16″ in diameter while Phil is 6.5″ tall and 16″ in diameter at the opening. Both Carrie and Phil are not only fun and vibrant, but sturdy and durable. A perfect combination! Additionally, both are non-toxic, have beveled edges for easy pouring, and are flexible.

Carrie (retailing at $34) and Phil (retailing at $30) are now sold on the Soak website. Since purchasing one of these great basins is a no-brainer, your biggest decision will be what color. Happy choosing!

Infused with the deliciously essential oils of grapefruit, lavender (my fave!), and eucalyptus, Eucalan is available in a range of sizes from 100 ml to a 4 L. An unscented version is also available. Don’t forget the handy travel sized packets! And, that’s not all. Eucalan also features a line of ‘On the Go Clothing Care” featuring lint remover sheets and individually wrapped stain treating wipes. Now you can easily go green on the go. You’ll be in good company. This past spring, Eucalan was one of the swag sponsors for Suri Cruise’s birthday party!

Eucalan products are sold on their website as well as in retail locations worldwide. Don’t forget to tell us about your experience in our forums.

Several weeks ago, we told you about a survey which revealed that British women wash their bras only six times a year (on average). In that article, I discussed a proper lingerie care regimen, which is largely based around a good, reputable lingerie detergent. The makers of Soyelle sent me a few samples of the Soyelle Fine Lingerie Wash to try out, and I was very pleased with my experience!

Soyelle’s biodegradable and phosphate free lingerie wash comes in individual “unidoses.” Each dose is packed in thin plastic, so it is perfectly measured out – you don’t have to worry about fumbling with a measuring scoop. But the best part is that the plastic actually dissolves in cool water. So you just toss a packet in the water and you’re ready to go. When I used mine, I timed it, and found that it took about 30 seconds to dissolve. That’s more than enough time to round up whatever needs laundering, and it couldn’t be easier! These single doses also make Soyelle great for trips or weekends at the beach, especially since it also removes chlorine, suntan lotion, and salt water from bathing suits.

Laundering with Soyelle was pleasant and easy. There was a light, pleasant scent while I was washing my lingerie, but when I took everything off the drying rack the next day, the fabrics were scentless (which I was happy about, because then it doesn’t compete with my perfume!). I’m stashing these everywhere – in my laundry room, my overnight bag, my suitcase, and my beach bag. Soyelle is available in both hand-wash and machine-wash amounts, so you can always use just the amount of detergent that you need.

Soyelle not only offers lingerie detergent, but also many fun lingerie-themed items like brooches, sticky notes, linen fragrance, bra pads, cards, notepads, perfumed sachets, and cookie cutters. French customers can shop online at the Soyelle online boutique, or in more than 700 boutiques. If you’re outside of France, you can contact Kathryn at kkgsoyelle@aol.com to discuss ordering. If you are a lingerie designer or distributor, Soyelle can also work with you to create personalized gifts which you can give to your customers. Soyelle has already created partnerships with brands such as Antinea, Chantelle, Eres, Gossard, Lejaby, and Princesse tam.tam.

How often do you wash your bras? A recent survey by cleaning firm Dr Beckmann found that British women only wash their bras six times a year! Of course, this may not be a problem at all if you own a large number of bras – the more bras you own, the fewer times you’d be wearing them between your bimonthly launderings. But the same survey found that women own about 16 bras and wear them, on average, 7 times before bothering to wash them. Even Vivienne Westwood (right) has admitted that she never washes her bras!

Most lingerie professionals agree that while you don’t have to wash your bras after every wearing, you should wash after 2-4 wearings (allowing each bra at least one day of rest in between each wearing). Of course, you should use your own good judgement with this – you’ll have to wash more frequently if you’ve been sweating excessively or wearing perfumes or lotions. When laundry day does come around, a good rule of thumb is to hand wash using a detergent specifically made for lingerie (I like Forever New) – but be sure to check your bra’s care instructions first. A good lingerie detergent will actually help your bras stay in good condition for a longer time because it will help revitalize the elastic.

If you must wash your bras in a washing machine (which is not as good as hand washing!), be sure to fasten the hooks and put them in a lingerie bag. Set your washer to the most delicate cycle and use cool water. Most lingerie detergents will have machine washing instructions on them, so be sure to consult the bottle. After the washing cycle is complete, hang your bras or lay them flat to dry. Never ever put your bras in the dryer! The heat will destroy the elastic and your bras will die an early death!

Looking for lingerie bags or lingerie detergent? You can find them at Figleaves (UK/US), HerRoom, BareNecessities (they’re having a sale on their brand of lingerie wash right now!), Freshpair, or most other intimate apparel retailers.
