Belgian Huis is an American import company started by Hans Bulteryst, a native Belgian living in the US. As a result of so many requests to purchase Belgian products when he visited home, Hans decided to offer quality items through an online store. In addition to the handmade tablecloths, designer bed linens, and fancy crystal giftware, the site also offers luxurious linen sleepwear. In fact it claims that wearing the sleepwear will provide “the most comfortable sleep imaginable”.

I have always thought the fabric “linen” was somewhat tough and board-like next to the skin but according to the description this selection of Libeco Home sleepwear is “simple elegance” with its “breezy floating-on-air feeling”. It is also true, however, that the more often linen is washed the softer it feels. And interestingly Libeco.Lagae NV, the Belgian parent company, states that washing linen also produces a stronger garment. Created from the flax plant, the company manufacturers and distributes high-end linen and linen products.

Belgian Huis offers several pieces from Libeco’s “Lala” group. Pyjamas, long and short gowns, nightshirts, and bathrobes, are offered in the finest linen fabric in pretty solid colours from small to extra-large sizing. The short gown seems to be the most popular item in a choice of white, plum frost and light grey. The rest of the sleepwear matches with the same colour scheme and the sarongs and shawls are shown in lovely prints.

Although I do find this collection quite lovely, I read a very odd sentence that actually made me chuckle. Under the description of the pareos and sarongs, the company states, “linen sarong / parreo for women, matching the tablecloths, dinner napkins and table runner”. I can only wonder what woman would want her outfit to match her table linens? I think something must have been lost in the translation…
