The Ari Dein Love Affair Continues…

The year is 1930. In a suite at the Waldorf-Astoria, a young woman awakes, removes her silk eye mask from her eyes, and lets in the sun on a beautiful June morning. She takes a deep breath, pushes back layers of the softest sheets, and slides her feet into her slippers as her nightgown falls to touch the tops of her feet. I don’t think it’s a secret that larger panties have been growing in popularity lately, as big knickers are snapped up for their retro charm and vintage influence. But now Figleaves is backing up our bigger-is-now-better observations – the lingerie giant reports that larger panty sales are up 28% in the last year.

Nicky Clayton, Rigby & Peller‘s creative director, says:

“This season big is definitely beautiful. Did that title get your attention? It’s the phrase Strumpet & Pink have on their website, and it’s some of the only text on there that isn’t purely informational. The lingerie itself makes the statements, which is really the only way to give justice to it all. I always love looking at pieces from Strumpet & Pink – although I obviously appreciate so many different kinds of lingerie, this is one of those exquisite lines that just makes you stop dead in your tracks and let out a little gasp when you see all the perfectly executed buttons, ruffles, ribbons, and chiffon. It reminds me of icing on a cake – perfectly sweet and fluffy, almost too pretty to use!

According to Glamorous Amorous, Strumpet & Pink was founded in 2002 by Lisa Z Morgan and Melanie Probert. They focus on limited-edition handmade knickers, using pure silk, satin, chiffon, and crepe. Morgan and Probert say of their creations,

“Our prime concern; how does a woman actually feel when she wears one of our creations. It is this experience that makes our knickers beautiful. Strumpet & Pink achieve this by embodying the sensibilities of the flower i.e beauty, fragility, sexuality and joy and combining these with the sensuous qualities of pure silk crepe, satin, chiffon and tulle. The knickers are cut on the bias in such a way as to trace and disclose the contours of the female form. Our knickers brim with contradictions; they feel beautiful, sensuous, humorous, naïve, sexual, confident and playful. Each pair holds a discovery…”

The only drawback? The price. You’ll have to save your pennies for these – if you even have to ask, you probably can’t afford it Prices vary, but you can expect to pay £200 to over £500 for these beauties. So for me, they will remain firmly in my dreams! But if you can spare the cash, you can find a selection at Glamorous Amorous, Catriona MacKechnie, Coco de Mer, and Faire Frou Frou.

Baby Grand British Lingerie

Baby Grand is a relatively new label out of Britain. The company started as a pastime of making gift knickers for friends. The handcrafted vibe continues to guide the company. Baby Grand takes pride in creating something one of a kind. They offer a customised bespoke service for existing designs and their London atelier can even handle private commissions.

On the left is a black chiffon playsuit. The price is £245.00. It is a sheer one-piece garment with silk covered buttons up the front. On the right is bow back bandeau and knickers. The bandeau is silk with a large black bow in back for £71.00. The coordinating knicker is £49.00 with a solid silk front and polkadot mesh panel in back.

Baby Grand offers roughly twelve sets comprised of 16-18 pieces. They plan to offer limited edition pieces likely around Christmas and Valentine’s Day. The inspiration for the pieces is a love of 1940s and ’50s screen siren glamour, this is a label that takes inspiration from the classic pin up girl, with a sprinkling of the film noir femme fatale, and brings it up to date for the modern boudoir and beyond.

On the left is the mint babydoll slip. It is priced at £155.00 and made from French silk chiffon. This is strapless and you can also pick up the matching knicker. On the right, the babydoll camisole. This is slightly shorter than the slip and is £145.00.

More Days of the Week Knickers

In the recent “Looks for Less” article, I showed you some look-alike knickers that might allow you to indulge your lingerie cravings at more palatable prices. Seafaerygirl asked in the comments, “Any chance you could find ‘days-of-the-week’ panties for less?”

Well, Seafaerygirl, I did find a few options! It’s not a very common design in adult lingerie, which is why the Stella McCartney set I showed you a while ago was so special. But the good news is that I was able to unearth a few less expensive alternatives. First up, a set of cotton knit boyshorts by Mary Green, with the embroidery on the hip.

The complete set is $90-$92, which isn’t a budget-breaker when you consider that you are getting a set of seven. You can find this set at HipUndies and In the Mood Intimates. Panties.com offers a brighter color scheme for $85 a set.

Figleaves UK and Figleaves US also offer their own version of low-rise satin briefs.

On the US site, the set is normally $74 and is currently on sale for $37. The UK site sells theirs for £49, and there is no sale price at this time.

The final set I found is from Austique, a brand I hadn’t heard of before. At Austique, you can buy the panties individually by day for £10 a piece. The complete set also includes a “Happy Day” pair, in case you don’t finish your laundry on time!

You might remember previous Looks For Less articles where I showed you how to get designer styles inexpensively. So far, we’ve covered chemises and bras. Today, I’ve found some lookalike knickers to share with you! These may be just the ticket for anyone on a budget.
