This past Tuesday, CincyChic held a fundraiser in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA for breast cancer awareness which included a bra fitting “lunch n’ learn,” evening reception, fashion show, vendor booths, and decorated bras which were auctioned off for charity. Here are some photos of the walls of bras (including the delicious A-DD cupcakes given out by a vendor):

In the weeks before this event, CincyChic collected decorated bras from local businesses and individuals. These bras were then displayed on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati at various times throughout the day from 7AM to 7PM. Anyone passing through the square was able to vote for their favorite decorated bra, and the 10 favorite bras were auctioned off that evening at the afterparty to benefit Susan G Komen for the Cure.

I wasn’t able to attend the evening reception but I did enjoy the lunch n’ learn where Britt Cruikshank from La Silhouette Lingerie discussed the importance of a well-fitting bra, helped attendees discover their own bra sizes, and answered bra-fitting questions from the audience. Here are some of the great tips she emphasized during the event:

Before getting any plastic surgery done to your breasts, make sure you’re wearing the correct size bra to begin with. This will make large breasts more comfortable and provide the best shaping for any size. You may discover you don’t need surgery after all.

If your bra is uncomfortable or doesn’t fit you correctly, there is nothing wrong with you. There is something wrong with your bra - whether it’s the size, shape, or style. There is a bra out there for everyone.

If you need more support, don’t automatically buy wider straps to cinch up. Most of the support should come from the band, so make sure that is the correct size to properly support you.

Go through your lingerie drawer at least once a year to get rid of anything old, worn out, or stretched out. This is also a good time to get re-sized.

Get rid of all the sweats you wear to bed – be sure to wear something pretty and feminine! Even if you live with someone you don’t want to be super sexy in front of, there is modest and feminine loungewear that will make you feel your best.

“The perfect bra is like the perfect man: sensitive, supportive, and will never let you down.”

On February 7th, Eva Longoria Parker, Padma Lakshmi, and Deepak Chopra joined forces to present and speak at Lingerie Miami. The show was held at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and celebrated femininity and . The event was to benefit Brazil, Colombia, India, Jamaica, Mexico, and the USA. Marquis sponsors (Belvedere Vodka, Dom Perignon, MAC) joined top designers (Agent Provocateur, Carine Gilson, and Fifi Chachnil). Being a joint show for a celebrity cause, I doubt many new designs were unveiled at the show, but these three designers have deep trunks and I’m sure could put on quite a show. Check out more photos from the event at Getty Images. See more pictures of Mrs. Tony Parker at the Gossip Girls site.

Apparently, the event was a little chilly and Eva Longoria (usually seen in Spoylt on Desperate Housewives) had her own space heater brought in. The event was a sell out (starting at $500/seat) and properly launched a new philanthropic brand according to the founder Renata Mutis Black.

HOTmilk, one of our favorite maternity lingerie lines, is sending special shipments to the women of Zimbabwe. HOTmilk is sending underwear to help lower the risk of sexual abuse of the young women in the villages. My first thought, of course, was “How on Earth would that help?” Morag Roy, a former Zimbabwean teaming up with HOTmilk for the project, discovered during a trip back to Zimbabwe that the sexual abuse of young girls was rampant. When he asked a priest what would help keep the girls from becoming victims, the priest told him that “underwear gives a woman prestige, shows that they have money, and means men are less likely to assault them.“ Roy returned to Zimbabwe six months later, with a suitcase full of bras, and saw first hand how much it helped.

During the trip, Roy also discovered that most girls and their mothers often only own one pair of tattered panties, and so they often just won’t wear any. “They also desperately need knickers, but I guess a Catholic priest wouldn’t have thought about mentioning that!” said Roy.

When HOTmilk learned this, they set out to help. HOTmilk co-owner and co-designer Angie Crosbie said,

“Sometimes we can take a lot for granted, from the roofs over heads right down to the fact we own underwear. When we heard that something as simple as undergarments had the possibility of giving young women in Zimbabwe a better chance to live a life free of sexual abuse, we knew that we wanted to help. Morag had done such a great job in gathering thousands of bras for her cause and we were delighted to donate 6,500 brand new pairs of underwear for her project.“

HOTmilk’s freight forwarder, Express Logistics, also helped the cause by sponsoring the transport of the underwear from New Zealand to Zimbabwe. HOTmilk has sent the underwear is currently awaiting and update from Roy.

I read a very nice news tidbit the other day about Intimate Fashions business owner, Barbara Graves from Little Rock, Arkansas. She owns a specialty lingerie shop focusing her attentions on women with special fitting needs. Since 1973, she and her staff have helped women by providing an extensive mastectomy department.

As she is regularly involved in the “Race for the Cure Campaign”, Barbara decided to provide free camisoles to women with no or inadequate insurance. The campaign is called “Camis For A Cause” and is also supported by St. Vincent’s Cancer Center and Baptist Breast Center. To help with the campaign, Amoena donated eight hundred dollars.

Amoena, a large international corporation “provides a better quality of life for women who have undergone breast surgery”. They offer a very large collection of lingerie, swimwear, loungewear and other intimate apparel for women who require undergarments designed to restore confidence and self-esteem. Their line of foundation garments is created for different cultures and different women’s styles.

Surprisingly, there are many more eco-friendly lingerie labels than I would have imagined. They may not all be conglomerates but with so many small endeavours cropping up everyday, it surely must mean that our attitudes toward the earth are changing. And “Fully Stoked” is one micro niche that includes a tiny line of intimate apparel, specifically panties and camisoles.

While an Australian company, the products are made by American Apparel, a huge Los Angeles enterprise with the long standing belief of excellent worker conditions in an industry that has been considered “sweat shop” based. The most interesting part about the bras that Fully Stocked sells is they are “latchless”, meaning that there are no extra metal or plastic pieces to be thrown away when the bra is discarded. Also, the cup support is derived from soft interlock cotton.

Although a small selection to offer, a large thirty percent of the profits from thongs, high waist short-shorts, feminine boy briefs, bras, and camisoles are donated to conservation causes such as Bush Heritage Australia, Chimpanzee Conservation and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

Joining many other brands and stores in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rigby and Peller took their support one step further and released a limited edition style specifically for this October. The best-selling Alondra range is an art deco style, with embroidery on mesh tulle. Ribbons and crystal trim provide the finishing touches on these luxurious pieces. Alondra bras are available in full cup, plunge, and balcony styles in a full range of sizes as well as coordinating bikini briefs and g-strings.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rigby and Peller has created the Alondra range in a soft, pale pink. During the month of October, 10% of the sales price (less VAT) of any pink Alondra pieces will be donated to the Breast Cancer Haven. They anticipate donating £3,000 in total. Get yours here.
