The cups incorporate pads which can be worn black side out, colored side out, or which can be removed for a sheer cup look. While this bra isn’t a dead ringer for any more expensive styles I found, it does look inspired by several in its various states which makes this a great look for less. The bra is available in white, red, teal, blueberry, or purple garnet and all have black lace accents. Each normally retails for $30, or $24.50 when you buy 2 or more. Teal, blueberry, and purple garnet are on currently sale for $19.99 each.

A designer, Thom (from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), helps people fix up their homes. To get a sense of their style, Thom asks for “3 and 3″ – three things you love and three things that reflect your style. He uses these props as inspiration. Rarely do the props become actual centerpieces of the room. On a recent episode (iTunes US), Thom is helping Tabitha. Tabitha is a single gal that is settling down after taking a turn globe trotting the world as a magician’s assistant.

One of Tabitha’s items is a rhinestone garter belt. (Click here to watch a small clip from the show and to see Tabitha unveil her three choices). I’m pretty sure I remember that piece from three years ago when Victoria’s Secret was producing a fall line and adding their own sense of glamour. I haven’t tracked any of the originals, even on the vast eBay. Frederick’s of Hollywoodicon is offering a kit of bra and string for $39.00 US a piece.

There weren’t very many styles and they didn’t stick around very long, but they were a novelty while they lasted. Now, a year and a half later, Frederick’s Hollywood is trying their hand at this sort of product with the Hollywood Reversible Plunge Bra. These bras are available in nine different combinations; some have two solid colors, and some have a solid color on one side and a print on one side. The website says,

“One bra. Two sexy two looks! This deep plunge bra may feel barely-there because of its luxuriously supple microfiber fabric, but it offers maximum support and versatility with two sides to choose. Innovative soft wire shaping provides beautiful cleavage without padding. Deep plunge front for a sexy silhouette. Hidden elastic wings for smooth, flat fit. Swan hook adjustable closure. Colors that reverse to solids (Amethyst/Mink, White/Frederick’s Pink and Jade/Frederick’s Red) have two sets of straps to match both sides of the bra.”

The Hollywood Reversible Plunge bra is availble in sizes 32A-42F, although DD-F cup sizes are a fuller cup style and have fewer pattern/color choices. The bras are $30-$32 each, but are reduced to $24.50 when you buy two or more. And for a limited time (until 5/31), you can recieve a coupon for $20 off your next order when you purchase a reversible bra. There are matching thongs available for $8 (or 4 for $25). While the thongs themselves are not reversible, they are available in every combination you need to match whichever side you’re wearing your bra on – so you may want to buy both matching thongs to go with your reversible bra for the illusion of having two seperate sets.

I’ve found a range of lookalike pieces that may help satisfy your craving for some of the more costly, but gorgeous, chemises out there right now. I can’t say that the less expensive pieces will all live up to the inspirations, in cut or fabric quality. How is the lingerie industry doing? Signals and stories are mixed from various industry sources. On the manufacturing front, relocation stories continue. US lingerie giant Frederick’s of Hollywood is moving their remaining US manufacturing to the Philippines. In response to unprecedented macro economic conditions, Frederick’s is “continuing to reduce operating expenses, primarily through reductions in personnel,” said executive chair Peter Cole. While Frederick’s looks to reduce their operational costs, other US manufacturers have shut down including Prima Lingerie Inc., New Waves Apparel Inc., Blue Horizon Logistics & Sourcing Inc. and Sensuous Lingerie Inc. (from Dennis D. Estopace)

Retailers have mixed reports. In a press release BeCheeky reports “a 75% increase in sales volume and an 85% increase in turnover on prime Mega Monday – 8th December 2008, compared with the same day in 2007. The lingerie specialists are now set to be 50% up this December on last, impressively bucking current retail trends, and highlighting how promising growth opportunities can still be found.” (BeCheeky Press Release). In the US, dismal figures were released the day after Christmas. “Overall apparel sales were down 19.7 percent, with women’s apparel dragging down the sector with an astonishing 22.7 percent decline.” Additionally, apparently bad news for luxury lingerie retailers: “Sales of luxury goods at jewelry, leather and department stores dropped 34.5 percent.” (ABC News) As a simple example, Sirens on Third is a lingerie retailer in the high traffic Cherry Creek shopping district in Denver, Colorado. Before the Christmas holiday, Christine Tallerico said she’s not going down without a fight. She has put virtually everything in the store on sale at 50 percent off. “Hopefully, the sale this weekend and Christmas coming, hopefully we’ll have a good turnaround,” Tallerico said. “Things have got to get better.” (CBS Denver) In the UK, retailer John Lewis reported “improved sales in the final four days before Christmas. Its department store sales rose by 2.5 percent between December 21 and December 24. The store benefited from strong sales of items such as iPods, fragrance and lingerie.” (Times Online)

As reported earlier in TLP, the trade show sector will suffer with Lingerie America’s shutting down.

Frederick’s of Hollywood has just merged with Movie Star Inc., and is now working on a grand expansion. While many other US companies are downsizing, the newly merged company is planning to open fifty new stores around the country in the next three years. Plans are also underway to explain the online catalog revenues. Movie Star Inc. was a much smaller company, but a look at their collections reveals that the aesthetic is similar to some of Frederick’s pieces, which may explain why the companies were drawn to each other. As the cup size increases, the padding decreases. The bra is offered in A-DD cups. Besides the variable padding, the Biofit bra resembles most modern t-shirt bras with sleek moulded cups and minimal stitching. As of this writing, there are generic knickers you can add to your order, but no other matching pieces. The release of the Biofit bra features VS Models Karolina Kurkova and Adriana Lima.

Other than the sexy spokespeople, the Biofit bra comes shortly after hearing that VS will be toning down their super sexy line. “Victoria’s Secret owner Limited Brands, Inc., announced in late February that its profits for fourth quarter 2007 were downVictorias Secret Biofit Bra Navy Blue 12 percent, and expected them to go lower. In addition, store chain CEO Sharon Turney was quoted by The Wall Street Journal as saying the franchise had ‘gotten off’ its heritage and that the clothing brand had become ‘too sexy.’ She said it would return to more sophisticated and less overtly seductive styles.” (Ed Thomas)

Has Victoria’s Secret risked becoming a mall equivalent of Frederick’s of Hollywood? FoH is a venerable U.S. institution, but for at least the last fifteen years, their catalog has focused on special occasion garments, costumes, and sexy outfits. In that same time period, Victoria’s Secret has grown to be the dominant retail lingerie purveyor in the U.S. Following the inevitable rules of business and markets, competitors have entered Victoria’s Secret market space. These new competitors have found specialized niches that Victoria’s Secret has not been able to address. Lane Bryant’s parent company, Charming Shoppes, has been spinning up their plus size line, Cacique. Cacique sells bras from 36C-48H. Victoria’s Secret has inconsistently offered products above cup size D, so Cacique can certainly capture this market. Chico’s has also built out their Soma Lingerie line. Soma caters to the same demographic as Chicos which is a sophisticated, slightly older woman. As Victoria’s Secret emphasizes youth, Soma can build on their Chicos success within the same demographic. The Gap has pushed into the basics market with their Gap Body stores which provide everyday intimates. American Eagle Outfitters has offered Aerie for younger girls to compete with Victoria’s Secret teen line Pink. Abercombie and Fitch are set to release their own intimates line to further compete with Pink and Aerie.

All of this competition is good for consumers as prices become more reasonable and more demographic sectors are covered.
