Brazil’s Fourth Annual National Underwear Day
In commemoration of Brazil’s Fourth Annual National Underwear Day, 50 models strutted down the streets of Brazil’s capital in nothing but their undies, catching the eye of every passerby. I lived in Brasilia for two years (before this event came to fruition) and I’ve got news for you: even though Brazilians are thought to be beautiful creatures that walk around in their tiny bikinis all day, this is so not true, especially not in Brasilia, which is hours away from a single beach, so I was very surprised to learn about this event!
On February 9th at about 2:00 p.m., the 50 models marched past one of the city’s largest malls and then took down the escalator into Brasilia’s main bus terminal, which is about as packed as Times Square. Sound kind of familiar? That’s because the event is a reflection of the Freshpair’s National Underwear Day, which we always cover on TLP.
According to a Brazilian newspaper, the event was sponsored by fashion magazine Finíssimo in celebration of Brasilia’s 50th birthday. “We had 50 models wearing intimate apparel in tones of black and gray with futuristic make-up and hair. All of this, to represent the city’s unique architecture and urbanism,” said Thiago Malva, executive director of Finíssimo. (Fun fact: Brasilia is shaped like an airplane, and parts of the city are named North Wing and South Wing. When the city was built 50 years ago, everything was strategically planned to be super functional and futuristic. There are buildings practically suspended in the air and the roads are designed to minimize bumper-to-bumper traffic.)

hmmmm…your comments about the city plan of Brasilia are more interesting than this underwear event. Could just be the video editing, but the event looked underwhelming, to say the least. Instead of representing the city’s urbanism, seems to represent zombie-ism to me! And this from the Carnivale capital?!

June, I totally agree. I spoke with my sister about this event the other day (she lives and works in Brasilia) and while she was out to lunch, she saw the whole event go down and thought it was “really lame.” As much as I love Brasilia, I have to admit the whole thing probably would’ve been more exciting if it was held in Rio de Janeiro.
