“Pointy Bras Make a Comeback” – Daily Mail

The Daily Mail recently declared that pointy bras are making a comeback. Citing recent Louise Golden and Jean Paul Gaultier catwalks, DM claims that the surge in sales “is indicative of a desire to celebrate women’s curves that has followed previous periods of economic turmoil.” A spokesman from John Lewis said,

“Sales have shown that women are no longer hiding their breasts under minimiser bras but embracing their assets and using them to their advantage….Throughout the last century the trend for feminine pointy shaped bras experienced a renaissance following times of a toughened economy, marking a return of unabashed femininity as women seek to have more fun with fashion as a form of escapism.”

John Lewis also reports that some of their best “pointy bra” sellers are Fantasie’s Belle range and Triumph’s Doreen bra (both of which can also be found at Figleaves).

Personally, I’m not entirely sold on the idea that this is all a result of the recent economic turmoil. I think retro styles in general have been becoming more popular in recent years, so it only follows that more vintage-style silhouettes would also come into popular fashion. The hit television show Mad Men has also definitely done its part to glamorize these classic underpinnings to perhaps a whole new group of shoppers. But whatever the reason, I think we can all agree that it’s a fun silhouette to add to your lingerie drawer, and any trend that helps diversify the lingerie available to us is a good thing!

If you’re interested in trying out this trend but the bras pictured above aren’t pointy enough for you, you may want to consider a bullet bra. Bullet bras are the attention-grabbing, conical bras that you might think of when you conjure up images of Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and other “sweater girls.” You might be able to find authentic vintage bullet bras if you’re an adept second-hand shopper; otherwise, What Katie Did and Secrets in Lace both have good new versions modeled after vintage bras. They both also offer bullet bra pads, which will perfect that pointy silhouette.

Do you wear pointy/bullet bras, or do you stick to a more rounded shape?

  1. Spot on analysis. A little marketing hype and a vintage vogue does not a widespread trend make. Fun as these looks are, I do not suspect that we will see too many weaponized brassieres in everyday settings. Draw attention they do, but perhaps a little too much.

For me, a more rounded shape toujours. I really don’t have the true sweater girls figure.

    Lovely post!

Lol as fun as they are I really can’t see these as an everyday look.

I do occasionally wear a bullet bra (purchased at SecretsInLace). I’m convinced it will not become a real trend …. this is only for ladies that enjoy retro … and there are not many left. Certainly not of my age : not yet 40.

Then again I enjoy a lot of retro stuff. Who still enjoys a regular oldfashioned wetset ? Who still wears slipdresses with each dress ? Who still wears the occasional petticoat under her poodle-skirt ?

Personally, I have a bustline that hates the “rounded” look (doesn’t fit properly), so I’m really looking forward to seeing more like this. Here in Pert, Western Australia, there is a BIG vintage following amongst the youth, so it would do really well here. I hope it reaches over here before it dies out!

I love bullet bras! Props for the POINTS!
