After wearing a 36B for several years with frequent adjustments and the wrong fit, I measured myself and came up with 38A. After I tried this size, it fit much better but the cups were still a bit too big. 38AA is my true size and stays in place all day.

Marna - I don't size myself by measurements anymore, but by how my current bras are fitting, but I do periodically get professional fitters to double-check my size because a second opinion is free and can't hurt! And we always agree. I'm not a professional fitter, but every professional I have spoken with about this topic agrees on adding some inches to the original measurement to get an approximate band size. Hopefully with the rest of the information here, women will be able to find their correct band size based on how bras of different sizes fit their bodies - if we do that, using our initial calculations as just an approximation, then in the end it won't matter if we add inches initially or not.

Hi Kelly- I am a professional bra fitter and I can tell you that eternalvoyageur is correct- you do NOT at anything at all to your underbust measurement. If it's an odd number, you have the option of rounding up or down to the nearest band size depending on your personal fit preferences. Adding as much as 5 inches to your measurement would result in an completely ill-fitting bra. If you're finding your own size by doing this, you really should go get a correct fitting at a place that carries your size (like Bravissimo). Sometimes stores that don't carry one's size will try to sell you on the "add inches" trick in order to fit you into what they carry-- department stores are notorious for this. But go to any good corsetier and they will fit you right :)

Good article, thanks - and the replies show how contentious the subject can be. I use a specialist bra measuring tape from www.brameasurement.co.uk and I find that works for me but if you are in doubt (and 4 out of 5 are apparently) get a tape or get measured in store.

aprestia, if you don't own any non-padded bras, the best thing to do is really to get a professional bra fitting. The bra fitter will be able to advise you on styles that will fit your widely spaced breasts, and also help with any fit issues you are having. If you must measure your bra size yourself, you could always bring a tape measure into a dressing room with you while you try on an unpadded 34A!

I need some help. I'm about 80% certain I'm already wearing the right size bra (34A) but I'm in dire need of new ones and since I still have a very hard time finding ones that fit (due to the fact that my breasts are VERY widely spaced) I figured I should double check before I head to the store. My problem is this - everywhere I've looked says to measure while wearing a good fitting non-padded bra but I don't OWN any non-padded bras, due to my very small cup size and, shall we say, enthusiastic nipple? Without a bra, following this method, I get a different of -2 for the cup size, which I'm sure cannot be right, but a padded bra adds WAY too much, and while the under band measurement matches my current 34 inches, the OVER bust measurement I get is only 33. And I know from experience that 32 anything is too tight. What do I do???

I found my real bra size. It is 60DD. But I should wear 55E or F. Unfortunately nobody makes 55. The second problem is bras 60 often stretch too much! Why do the lingerie companies don't care about the smaller women? I also agree with eternalvoyageur: don't add anything underbust measurement.

Hi eternalvoyager!

Ever reference and professional bra fitter I've ever consulted agrees to add 5 inches to your actual measurement to get your band measurement. But, as I said, the original measurement is only an approximation. Like you, I wear a band size smaller than the one my fitter originally had me try on based on my measurements.

Good for you for wearing a bra you know fits well! So many women aren't and I truly pity them!

I really have to disagree. You do NOT add anything to your underbust measurement. If you did that, you'll end up with a band size that's too big ! Remember that while the tape measure does not stretch, a bra band does. A lot.
ather, you take the measurement tightly, with your breath out, then substract 5 cm, and then round it DOWN to the nearest band size. That's the only way to get a bra that fits well. I've gone down from wearing 75C to 60DD and it's fantastic ! Now my bra band stays in place all day no matter what I do, no adjusting necessary; the cup goes all around my breasts, I don't remember what jiggling boobs are, and it all looks much better than before !
